The "Chew on This" record label was the subject of an unusual and expensive legal battle between the band and the record label. In May 1977, the record company was given a temporary injunction to prevent them from selling the album until an injunction could be granted. The band was in court on May 30, and the injunction was granted. They eventually won out and had the injunction revoked, but not before it had had a disastrous effect on the band. The album was never sold, and they continued playing live for several more years.
On August 5, 2009, former KISS bassist Gene Simmons stated that the lawsuit was the "first lawsuit he has ever had agnst the band" and that "We all got together, we all agreed to pay. We're never gonna fight with Gene agn. We're all really, really sorry."
On March 27, 2013, a federal court judge approved a deal to sell the album at a profit for the first time in more than three decades.
